LSU Finishes Season with Split at 1st Annual SHCC Tournament

The LSU Tigers finished up their 2nd full season with a trip to Birmingham to participate in the Southeastern Hockey Conference (SHC) Championships. The event was an inaugural tournament built to showcase ice hockey clubs who represent ACHA clubs from the traditional 'SEC' schools. The Tennessee Volunteers built on their 43 years of experience and captured the first ever SHC trophy.

LSU split their games in the tournament with an opening round loss against the South Carolina Gamecocks, but rebounded with a win over the Mississippi State Bulldogs. The Tigers finished their second full year with an improved 7-16-0 record. As expected, the Tigers will review the highs and lows of the season and almost certainly already look forward to rematches next season for games they let slip away this year. The Tigers are expecting to return at least nine starters and should carry a wealth of experience into their third full year.

The Tigers would especially like to thank Buddy Damare of Alabama for spearheading the tournament planning and congratulate all those who volunteered for hosting an event that surpassed everyone's expectations for a first-year tournament. It is expected to continue next season and grow with all of the clubs in the SHC which will also see the Ole Miss Rebels beginning play in the 2009-10 season.

Keep checking back often as we expect to have the 2009-10 schedule completed and posted by the end of the Spring. Tiger Hockey is alive and well in Baton Rouge and we thank all of our fans for all of your support this year and look forward to more positive steps next season!

LSU Ice Hockey leads SHC with Seven Academic All-Americans

While finishing the season ranked a respectable 27th of 41 teams, LSU Hockey is taking home top honors in one important category this season...Academics. The Tigers, in just their second full season, lead all SEC schools with a total of seven ACHA Academic All-Americans. The Tigers are second only to Georgia Tech, who leads with eight.

“It’s a great accomplishment for our guys to showcase the quality of the academic programs at LSU while balancing their commitments to a growing ice hockey program” said LSU Head Coach Leonard Alsfeld. “However, if you look at the subjects these guys are studying, it exemplifies just how hard these guys challenge themselves in the classroom.”

Seniors Clark Alsfeld, Brandon Hicks, and Corey Rougelot are all continuing on to medical school to become doctors. Senior Kyle Morgan, who helped start the team two years ago before studying in England for a year, is headed to graduate school in Psychology. Senior Alex Whelan currently works in the Life Sciences laboratories and will graduate with his degree in Biochemistry.

Of the seven players recognized, the squad actually produced two C’s. Team Captains Rusty Ware and Mike Mayeux were also recognized for their academic efforts. Ware is a year away from completing his PhD in Kinesiology and Mayeux is a Junior excelling in Mass Communications. “Leadership in academics makes a strong statement for the leadership all of these players show with the team” said Alsfeld. “As we continue to build our program, having these young men succeed in the classroom builds a strong foundation for LSU’s success both on and off the ice for years to come.”

As the flagship institution for the state, LSU has long been recognized for a rich intellectual environment and distinctive educational programs that are rooted in the unique culture, history, and geography of Louisiana. The quality of LSU’s academics is reflected in the number of nationally ranked programs and nationally recognized scholars at LSU. Since its first commencement in 1869, LSU has awarded nearly 200,000 degrees. That number continues to grow and includes some of the nation’s best and brightest graduates.

In addition to being a nationally recognized academic institution, LSU has won 45 team national championships, 41 of which are recognized by the NCAA, tying them for 5th all time in total national championships.

Soliders Abroad Follow LSU Ice Hockey

LSU Ice Hockey is making fans all over the globe.  Maybe it's the thoughts of the cold ice, or maybe just a love of LSU Athletics - but whatever the reason we are proud to have US Army Cpt. Chad Moore as a proud fan of LSU Hockey!  We received a very special gift from Cpt. Moore - a US Flag which was flown in Iraq during combat there.  We thank all of the soldiers service in Iraq and in any of the armed forces all over the world - and we pray for their safe return.
